MARION, Ind. -- A former sheriff's detective from Grant County admitted to stealing drugs from the department's evidence room, but he insists he was not the only thief on the force.
Shelby Taylor was sentenced Tuesday to nearly two years' probation after pleading guilty to official misconduct, theft, and possession of a controlled substance.
Taylor was charged after being accused of stealing painkillers from the evidence room nearly 20 times over the last three years, according to The Chronicle-Tribune.
Taylor admitted to taking some painkillers from the evidence room, but insisted he was not the only thief on the force. He told the judge, "others are just as guilty as I am."
He said he stole the drugs to help with joint and back pain.
Taylor resigned from the Grant County Sheriff's Department in August.
